What computer do I need?

Computer Requirements

Short Answer:

Most Windows PC computers made since 1998 will run our programs. If you're not sure, try them out with our trial CD.  Trials are identical to the full version, only time limited.  So if the trial works, so will the full program.  You can also buy programs with our Money Back Guarantee. 

Detailed Answer (for computer geeks)

• Windows 95 or higher required, Windows 2000 or above recommended.

  That means Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, or Vista. 
  If your computer has a Start button in the lower left comer, you've got one of those versions. There are several options for your Macintosh.

• Sound Card

  If  your PC ever plays music (even  just at start up) it has a sound card.  If it has external speakers, it probably has a sound card.  Speakers plug into the sound card.

• CD-ROM drive

• Microphone

  Required only for programs that record speech (Sights'n Sounds, Numbers'n Sounds, and SpeechPrism) These are inexpensive. We sell them for $9.50.

• Screen that can display 256 or more colors.
• 20 MB Hard Drive space per program

I can't download the free demo.  How can I get the software?

How can an aphasic person use a computer if they cannot talk (or read or write)?

This software is specially designed by a speech therapist for use by those with aphasia.  All of the programs can be used by pressing just a few keys on the keyboard.  You could even color-code those keys if needed.  In fact, one of the programs requires only the pressing of a single key.

I don't have an appropriate computer.  How do I use the programs?

The programs do require a Windows PC computer.  However, we do have an economical Therapy PC package which includes a computer.  Click here for more details.

Which programs are best for my situation?

Do these programs require special training?

No special training is required.   Someone should work with the patient (survivor) to get them started.  However, the programs are very easy to use. 

No one here knows how to operate a computer. How can we use the programs?

For the computer novice, we have the  Therapy PC (includes a PC and therapy software).  This includes over-the-phone training and consultation.  Your personal consultant will familiarize you with the programs and how to make maximum use of those programs. Is it too late?

No.  It's never too late for speech therapy.  While much recovery occurs immediately after a stroke, etc., it is never too late to receive benefit from computer-assisted speech therapy.  In fact, one study included subjects who were 15 years post-stroke.  The study concluded that "...language function can be broadly, positively, and significantly influenced by computer-based language therapy in chronic aphasia"  It's never too late.
